The Best Man Congratulates the Groom at 2PM

Long Eddy, NY

The best man, on the right, gives a classic pose, while congratulating and offering
best wishes to the white tied groom on the left. On a technical note, this was a
challenging photo. The effects of scorching 2pm sun can totally destroy a wedding
photo. Faces can be totally washed out with deep black shadows can appear like black
holes in the eye sockets. The tuxedos can get plugged totally in black. To counter
that, I used Canon's new eos 40D camera set using custom functions to highlight tone
priority. In addition, I stopped down to f/11 to get the blue sky in focus. To counter
the shadowing and providing some fill, especially in the eyes, I used a remote flash 45°
on the left directly aimed (pointed horizontally) at the two subjects using a Gary Fong
lumisphere and, on my camera, the Canon 580 ex with an attached lumiquest mini softbox.

Few important observations; Canon 580 could've been better of with cigarette box as diffuser; and we don't know when ceremony started , so really it's difficult to judge whether these fellas are at the verge of collapsing under the scorching sun, or can still make it through the day ?!

Congrats on the new toy. How do you like it. Yep your fill light made it look great. Great shot in difficult lighting conditions.
