Wired City Station at the University of Pennsylvania

University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA

Damn the wires.... but then again, the wires do add a bit of perspective,
do they not? It is certainly, at the very least a complicated scene and a
most ambitious composition. But does it work? Shot taken from the third
floor of the University of Pennsylvania Hospital Parking Garage in Philadelphia.

You cannot ever underestimate an importance of the wires for adding prospective and dramatism to the shot, regardless whether it's urban settings or electrical chair. Personally this is the first thing I pay attention to when I see fresh out of the camera image, and if they are not there, then ratings of the image collapse drastically, virtually in no time... In this particular case, the wires came as true shoker, since if you would've rotated them about 50 degree and extended up to the top of the construction crane, then , oh yes, voila, that should've been a fabulous image... Yet, it's obvious now that an importance of this classic element was not taken in to account and we have to deal with consequences of this irreponsible decision ! Kees was trying to add element of mystery to the image while mentioning the car, yet, again, mystery is defined by , say, Bentley or Ferrary roaring through sleepy neighbourhood, but unfortunately it's Toyota Camry... To save a situation, I would strongly recommend to get rid of both Toyota and wires altogheter and celebrate aperfection of this fabulous otherwise image ! Hopefully, you're not tired yet from my bupkas and schmarn ?!

My first impression of this shot is that it is waaaaay to busy. There is just so much happening in teh shot that you have no idea what to look at but when you squint, the focus goes to the dome and the metro sign. The colours are all balanced and the composition works remarkably well. The lines form a focal point which unfortunately leads the focus out of the picture to the left but the perfect placement of the car going in the same direction adds an element of mystery which rebalances the shot. It is a shot that grows on you but you have to see it at its best resolution to really appreciate its power. A great shot indeed.
