Christmas Snowman in the Window on January Fourth

Chinchilla, PA

It is January 4, 2007 and my neighbor still has not taken her Christmas decorations out
of her Kitchen Window. And that is a good thing. A good thing because today I want to
experiment using my 580ex flash directed at a subject through a window. It is about 2 pm
in the afternoon and the sun is extremely bright. Likewise, in the rear of the home, on
the opposite side of the sun, the shadow makes the window and its contents very dark. I
approach the window at about a 45° angle from about 6 feet away sporting my 30D camera
equipped with an ef 85mm f/1.8 lens and my Canon 580ex flash. Setting my camera on aperture
priority at f5.6 with spot metering, the shutter adjusts to 1/125 sec at 400iso. I set the
focus dot right on the chin line separating the white chin and the red sweater. After taking
the shot I looked at my playback screen and was amazed that I saw no bounce back reflection
and that the colors looked really good. I must tell you I was truly amazed.

Note about the composition. I would have loved to have re-arranged the Christmas stuff in
my neighbors window. However, my neighbor, unfortuneately was not at home. You should also
know that I did not purposely crop out the "Merry Christmas" message in the snowman's arms.
The edge of the window itself did that.

Nice lighting and colors, but be careful sticking your camera in neighbors windows, you could get in trouble that way.

Great exposure, Michael...you got good detail in the whites. Terrific colors too!
