Catching the Rising Sun at Montauk Point

Montauk Point, Long Island, New York (NY)

Racing against time, I pushed the pedal to the metal to travel 120 miles
across the Belt Parkway, the Southern State and the Montauk Highway, in
order to get to Montauk Point, Long Island at 6:30 a.m.. to capture this
scene. Starting from Sheepshead Bay, in Brooklyn NY at 4:00 a.m. I had
three concerns. 1) Would I get there in time. 2) Would I use the right
lens and the right settings; would I blow it and 3) Would it be worth it.
You be the judge. The combination of the rising sun and the design of
Long Island's most famous lighthouse museum does it for me every time.
And oh can you just smell that ocean air.

About the Lighthouse & Museum and State Park

The Montauk Point Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in New York State.
The Lighthouse was authorized by the Second Congress, under President George
Washington in 1792. Construction began on June 7, 1796 and was completed on
November 5, 1796. This 100 foot tower has been part of Long Island's land and
seascape for over 200 years and still serves as an active aid to navigation.
This beautiful historic site plays frequent host to wedding ceremonies and
other special events. Group and school tours(20 or more) are available on
a year round basis at the Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum.

I have to simply applaud to this spiritual strive for perfection and should appreciate your driving skills ! Well, amongst the others, of course... Since this effort paid off, you might want to consider keeping the picture of the lighthous handy in your car, just to present it to police and get indulged whenever you get caught on speeding :-) !

Heeeeeeey Michael! Michlob! It is great to run into fellow Siggers on this site. There are so many great photographers around the word that no site will feature them all. I am glad to see that you are well established here and have added you to my favourites. I recognize this shot, beautifully presented. The light through the lighthouse glass is a bit bright and could have been edited along with the sky which is beautitiful. There is a surreal and contrasty mood in this shot that I really enjoy.Well done and I have added my vote.

As Bandito mentioned, the foreground could be better (darn site designers!)
but you've caught a nice sunrise nonetheless.

Hi Bandito. Thanks for your comment. I do agree... the State of New York could have done a better job with the structures and the landscaping which surround the landscape.... and for that reason, I did not stop here.... this photo is only the first of a series of photos that I took that morning and I will certainly be posting more views which preclude the disturbing aspects of the fence and guardhouse which appear in the foreground. All my best, Michael

As a Long Islander, who loves to go to Montauk, I applaud your commitment to driving that far, that early for "the shot." Very well done, and great result. We were just there on Saturday, but not for sunrise. I love the Montauk lighthouse, but unfortunately, it's not nearly as photogenic as some of the other east coast lighthouses, due to the fence, shack, big white building out back, etc. There's a great sunset angle shot during late spring and late summer from the western side, if you get back this way sometime.

ha ha ha ha ha.... I remember a similar drive to maine to catch a sunset. Oh this paid off handsomely I'd say. You must be very happy with it, no? You seem to have made all the right decisions and you have yourself a superb photo as a reward.

Does it for me! This is spectacular!! The colors, the comp, the lines that lead the eye up to the lighthouse - all stunning! Vote!
