We call these suicide beetles. There are usually 2 or 3 in the sink in the morning and they bomb us with their bodies when we read on the porch at night. They also seem to like bathing in glasses of scotch...once. I'm a Sierra foothills neighbor, in Grass Valley, where I saw the hummingbird clearwing that brought me to your photos as I tried to figure out what it was. Wonderful photos.
