Magic's Day

On May 15, 2003, I was at a local park taking pictures. As I was leaving I saw an elderly man walking a mid size brown dog. I asked if I could take the dogs picture and the man said "sure". We started talking and he said to me, "do you see that man over there with the poodle ? Well he needs to find it a home, do you know anyone who would want it ? " I walked over to the man with the poodle (which was chained to the softball field fence) and we started to talk.
The man's mother bought the dog in North Carolina and had a stroke. So he brought the dog to Pennsylvania, but his landlord wouldn't let him keep him. He had the Vets name and phone number in NC that a person could call to verify the story. One thing lead to another and to make a long story short, off I walked to my car with this little black, 6 month old, poodle.
I called the Vet in NC, verified everything, including the correct name. I looked at this little tiny 7 lb poodle and thought there is no way I am calling you Tyson. The man's last name was Black and the poodle is black, so Black Magic popped into my head. Hence his name is Magic.
I truly believe the man was going to leave him there tied to the fence, it was just a gut feeling. I also believe everything in this life happens for a reason, good or bad....I was suppose to have this dog. A power greater than me set the events and I just participated.
A year has passed since that day, Magic now weighs 14 lbs, and he is a mini poodle. He is smart, sweet and nothing like I imagined a poodle to be. He is loved by my other dog and cat (the other cat moved to AZ with my son). And he loves them and takes care of my old boy Noah, who is 8. Magic developed seizures right after his first birthday in October. He has only had 4 total and they are pretty mild.
Today, May 15, 2004 Magic and I visited the park. It was special in two ways. First, of course, to take him back there and remember how fate intervened for him to be my beloved pet. Second, it was a dedication to a Healing Field for the victims of September 11th. The park was full of Flags with the names of all those who lost their lives that tragic day. They also dedicated Soldiers Field and will add flags for each Soldier killed in the War on Terrorism.
There was a stark contrast also as they prepared for a small carnival in the park after a parade today. All kinds of sites were seen and I wish to share some of them with you.
