The Rococo-style Palace and Park complex erected by Lithuanian artillery General Eustachy Potocki in 1750-1759 following the design of Royal architect Jakub Fontana.
The complex is counted among the top ten wonders of architecture, including Versailles
Sans Souci in Potsdam, Admirality Palaces in St. Petersburg, Sobieski’s Palace in Wilanow
Or the Branicki’s Palace in Bialystok. Its main nort-south viewing axis is linked to roads
heading straight ahead into the distance. Rebuilding the former residence of the
Szczuka Family Jakub Fontana maintainded the main body of the palace limited by corner
recesses and projections. He rebuilt the central projection and expanded an annexes
blending them into new palace wings broken up by gates-towers and finishing with wider
two-storey pavilions. In the south the yard in enclosed by a retaining wall in which there
is a forged iron gate opening onto a dyke between four water reservoirs.
Fontana designed also a garden the axis of which is emphasized by a water
canal and layout of main alleys. The garden is a work of Warsaw gardener David Knackfus.
The palace id decorated with wonderful groups of statues by Jan Chryzostom Rendler,
E. G. “Hercules fighting a Dragon”, “Hercules defeating Cerberrus” ”Theseus striking down the Minotaur”, “Samson tealing a lion apart”.
The Palace was a center of political and cultural life. Eustachy Potocki’s son, Ignacy
worked here on some of the 3rd of May Constitutions Articles.
Here Karol Lipinski (1790 – 1861) was born, a famous violinist, virtuoso and composer.
