The Orthodox church was erected in 1870-72 in the shape of Greek cross in the Byzantine style to replace a Roman Catholic church that had been next to the former St. Jacob's Market Square (currently Bieganskiego square). After Poland regained independence in 1918., the church was transformed into a Roman Catholic church. After World War II, the building underwent a slight change of style (especially inside) to resemble an early Christian temple - with original features of Orthodox church architecture preserved, according to the design of Stanislaw Pospieszalski. The church decorations include wall paitings with the Stations of the Cross depicted in a Bizantine style and neo-Romanesque furnishings from the 19th century.
