During SIP/LD as a result of the C-virus, we explored this section of the preserve for the first time. It is located side by side with Calero County Park off of McKean Rd in South San Jose. The preserve entrance is on Casa Loma Road from McKean Road, one mile south of Calero County Park Main Entrance. This entrance serves both parks. Looking at the Calero County Park trail map, the RCdO Preserve is on the left, Calero County Park to the right. We hiked a 4.3 loop trail with elevation gain of ~1000-1200 feet. We started out at the Longwall Canyon Trailhead (Junction 24) for about 1.2 miles before it splits up into two with one veering south toward a 3.1-mile Mayfair Ranch Trail for the return route. After the first 0.2 mile of flat terrain which is a maintenance road, the trail starts to elevate gradually but not too steep. The first mile is not much to comment about other than rough, uneven path. However, once we get to the top, it was splendid beyond words with such open space and lush vegetation during this spring time of the year. Oak trees are the highlight along this trail. Wildlife can be spotted thru out the preserve. Needless to say, wild flowers are peaking hopefully thru April. This particular section of the preserve would be ideal to hike thru out the year even during the summer months because it has shady trees here and there to stay out of the heat...
