May 2002 - Boeing 767-300 Cockpit Tour - Lambert (STL)

On our way back from Hawaii, Chelle and I had a great flight on our last leg from LAX to STL. We flew on a Boeing 767-300. The flight was commanded by Captain Robert Blumenshine. Both myself and Chelle were immediately impressed when Capt. Blumenshine came onto the cabin speaker when we reached our cruising altitude. He started talking about our route of flight, the outside air temperature at our altitude of 37,000 ft. (-60 degrees F), the visibility at our altitude (220 miles), the horsepower of the Boeing 767 (120,000 horsepower), our true airspeed in Mach (.80 Mach), the speed of sound at sea level (770 mph), the speed of sound at our altitude (650 mph), our current true airspeed (450 knots), our time enroute (2 hours 28 minutes), the noise abatement departure procedure from LAX (very steep ascent), turbulence en route (none) and notes of interest along the way (Grand Canyon, etc.) I just turned to Chelle and said, "Wow, this pilot truly loves his job." And it showed. On our descent into St. Louis he mentioned the temperature (64 degrees F), wind speed and direction (from the south at 30 knots), what runway we'll be landing on at St. Louis (12 right), the visibility (7 miles) and the cloud cover (partly cloudy). After a very good landing considering the severe crosswind Capt. Blumenshine came onto the cabin speaker, welcomed us to St. Louis and then said that if anyone is interested in the business end of aviation feel free to come up to the cockpit and take a look around. Chelle and I waited until everyone deplaned and we both went up to the cockpit and chatted with the captain for a while. Attached are the pictures of our cockpit adventure. These pictures were taken at around 2:20pm after our landing in STL. Also, this was after being awake for 30 hours after travelling all the way from Maui, Hawaii (5,000+ miles).
