Panoramic view of Kobarid

Kobarid, Slovenia

In Italian, its name is Caporetto. There were a series of battles in this area, between the Italians on one side, and Austria-Hungary (later battles included German troops) on the other. Hemingway wrote about the town and the Italian retreat in A Farewell To Arms. The bell tower he featured is on the right side of the photo.

Erwin Rommel fought here as a Captain during the Battle of Caporetto 1917, and in the 1930s wrote a best-selling book about the battle and his other war experiences. He won Imperial Germany's highest honor for his part.

This picture was taken on the grounds of the Italian Ossuary, where over 7000 soldiers are entombed. Mussolini dedicated it in 1938 (parts of present-day Slovenia and Croatia were part of Italy between the world wars). We walked up there in early morning, and on our way down I was going to shoot a picture of the Ossuary and only then saw a sign asking that no photos be taken of it. So I bought a post card of it in the town instead.

All shots in this gallery were taken with our Canon S50 Powershot. This is two shots stitched together.
