The Tablelands region of the Park contains a large area of peridotite, a mineral from the Earth's mantle. Two plates collided and after the crustal rock eroded away, this mantle rock was exposed. It is high in magnesium and other metals, so much so that it toxic to most plants, and therefore vegetation is sparse.
