I found myself on a quest to find the most feared animals in
New Zealand, it was very hard! All I could find was sheep, deer, goats, pigs,
horses, bunnies. There is one insect that most everyone agreed was a bit frightening
to them, the Giant Weta. Known as "the god of the ugly things" by the Mâori's. The
Giant Weta can grow to over three inches (8 cm) long and weigh as much as 1.5 ounces
(40 grams). Giant wetas can hop up to 2 feet (60cm) at a time. I did not see these
ugly creatures but apparantly they are plentiful. Seems that there is nothing
scary in New Zealand, no snakes, no croc's, no predators. It made me think about
what I fear when I go camping in Colorado, things like cougars, bear, bobcats,
snakes, moose, the list goes on. I really like camping in New Zealand!!!
