I must confess when in USA that the amount of smoking amazed me. BUT I so know why its like that. A. NZ's non smoking campaign is driven mainly by Green Politics, and moreso by economics. With our health system being public and free, cancer treatment and other ills associated with smoking, the government wants to cut costs. The best defense is a good offence, so its putting a sign at the top of the cliff rather than pickn everything up at the bottom, and the costs. PRIVATE health insurance as in the USA for those who can afford it, absolves the government of really giving a toss............because they dont have to pick up the tab.
B. We don't have a historical culture of the powerful tabacco lobies buried in the halls of power and puffing in certain peoples pockets.
C.Per head of capita we are probably a bit more outdoorsy as a nation, a bit more health conscious. Maybe.
I can remember being totally amazed at the number of people in America carrying around oxygen attached to them or in trolleys. Just don't see that here. Seeing these signs on the packets really opened my eyes to the differences. These way way past the surgeon generals health warning Teresa said was on US cigarette packets.
