Photos taken on Dauphin Island, a barrier island off the Gulf coast of the US state of Alabama. Also included are a few photos taken around the nearby region of the mainland, including the city of Mobile. Being a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico, Dauphin Island often gets pummeled by hurricanes.
The island has several bird sanctuaries, the main one being the 164 acre (66.37 ha) Audubon Bird Sanctuary. Dauphin Island is the first landfall for many birds as they migrate north from South America and because of this, many species can be seen resting there before continuing their northward migration. Unfortunately, when we were there few birds were to be seen as it was before the start of migration.
