Killala Round Tower

Dating from sometime between the 9th and 11th centuries,
it is considered to be one of the best in Ireland and indicates
the ancient celebrity of the place as an ecclesiastical centre.
Like all Round Towers, the Killala tower was most likely used
as a Belfry (as the Irish name - Cloig Teach- suggests) and
it would certainly have been a place of refuge from any hostile visitors.
