Landscape - Tandle Hills in Autumn

The Tandle Hills Country Park is situate in Royton, Oldham. There is an obelisk on the highest point in memory of the dead of both World Wars. The City of Manchester and the Manchester Plain can be viewed from this viewpoint. There is also a standing stone with an inscription. Erected recently it points out the fact that men of Royton drilled for the march to Manchester some 200 years ago when the carnage at Peterloo occurred. They were unarmed. The land was thereafter planted with beech trees planted very close together to prevent any further drills by large numbers. It was privately owned, gifted to the town in the early 1900's.
