Hanging executions were held here. The inmate would walk up the stairs and would be dropped through the trapdoor. This was the place used for hangings until a "proper" gallows ( an outdoor one with 13 steps ) was built. Public hangings drew large crowds but were discontinued after an obese inmate was decapitated during the event.
