Week 1-January 21-27, 1985 We flew on Taca Airlines from Miami to the small national airport at Belize City. Upon arrival everything seems so hot and bright, very unlike the tone in New Brunswick, New Jersey! This is the Rutgers Archaeological Field School at Nohmul, Belize, Central America. We all get loaded into the back of Mark Hodges' red pickup truck and rumble and bump our way up the Northern Highway past signs that say Ladyville, Crooked Tree, Lord's Bank, Lucky Strike.....into the larger town of ORANGEWALK and past San Jose, San Pablo and a left turn puts us on a dusty lime whitened road for a mile or so and we arrive at a sugarcane field that will be home for the next 2 1/2 months... Excavation at structure 8 Begin test pits Weekend spent at camp Nohmul and Sunday swim at the Belize Sugar Industries pool. -------------------------------------------------------------- Nohmul Project director Norman Hammond finished the work at the site in 1986 and moved his investigations to the neighboring sites of Cuello (until 1993) and most recently La Milpa (1992-2002), a large Classic period (AD 250-900) city in northwestern Belize. The La Milpa project has an international staff and is funded by the National Geographic Society and Boston University. . Norman also left Rutgers University in 1986 & leads the Archaeology department at Boston University Some basic information on Belize Nohmul is an important archaeological site in Belize, Central America. In 1985, Rutgers University was in it's 3rd season of excavation and the photos in this gallery document some of the associated activity...
