Las Monjas, or The Nunnery Complex

Las Monjas is a palacelike structure that is the largest at Chichén Itzá. It has been attributed to the Late Classic Maya period of A.D.600-900.

Las Monjas, or The Nunnery as named by the Spanish Conqistadors has nothing to do with the actual use or Maya names for these structures as they had been abandoned centuries before the Spaniards' arrival. The most heavily decorated [in Puuc Maya style] buildings in this complex are La Iglesia, or The Church and the adjacent East Annex building. Again, no reason for that names.
