A so called Chac-Mool statue reclines atop the Temple of the warriors, in an apparent gaze westward upon the setting sun and the towering El Castillo pyramid. Not very Mayan-like, as this image displays the Toltec [centered around Mexico City]influence of the Chac Mool, Atlantean figure to his left and the flat-topped pyramid beyond!
The older Mayan buildings can be seen in the southern part of Chichén Itzá ::
We were priveledged to see this setting only because we chose to spend the night at the nearby Club-Med run, Villas Arqueologicas. We stayed at Chichén until the park closed [notice dramatic setting sun] and then came back through the Hotel Mayaland grounds for the evening light show. A most recommended itinerary.
The alternative is to crowd through with a tour group during the 11am to 3pm tour bus schedule that also features the most oppresive heat of the day.
