Late Classic Period small but important site. Many stelae (inscribed limestone slabs) indicate that Cobá had numerous female rulers, a matriarch of sorts. Population estimates are around 50,000 for this one time political stronghold. Chichén Itzá was believed to have taken over as the dominant city in this area of Mayan Society.
