I do not know how much of the history of the volcano they told you but, the cross is at the same location Spanish priests, or conquistadores, placed one believing it was a gateway to hell. The greed of the Spanish was so that they actually lowered somebody down there, believing it was molten gold. As a kid, I had to walk from the entrance of the park all the way up to the parking area. I do not know how clear a day it was (not very clear from the looks of it) but it was so on that day. The view was just awsome, and the fear impressed in my mind is something that has lasted to this day. I was 12 then.
