Last summer when a house up on Jackson Road was put on the market the homeowner opened his chicken coop and released four Rhode Island Red Chickens to free range. They came to work my yard daily as I put out food for everybody. Every night they would return to the woods near their coop to roost in the trees. Sometime in the early fall ROSIE decided she now lived with us and took up residence on the wrought iron railing of my kitchen porch.

As winter got under way I thought she would eventually go home, but she didn't. As a nasty blizzard loomed I borrowed a dog crate and bought a bale of straw. I went out on the porch in the dark and the snow and just picked her up and carried her into my warm kitchen and placed her in the large crate and life as we knew it changed in Atco, New Jersey.

By day she was a happy chicken running to our car when we drove up, answering to her name by coming home when I called her and just generally being a charming character.

At dusk she would knock on the door to come in for the night. Rosie would sit beside my overstuffed chair until the end of the evening when I would walk her to the kitchen to go to bed for the night in her crate.

In the morning a lot of chicken yelling would announce the arrival of an egg (she really celebrated) and then it was out the kitchen door for a day in the life of a chicken.

Dear Toni Moore: A year ago, my wife and I went rock collecting near the town of Girard GA just off the Savannah River. At the clubs meeting place, about 10 to 15 chickens came up to the group and started sounding off as if they had all layed eggs, even the roosters. When everyone notice and started taking pictures, they stopped noise and posed for everyone to take pictures. It was absolutely wild!!! After the pictures were done they just casually walked back to their yard. Again, it was just wild!! Thanks aaaaah much for sharing!!!! Frank

We had chickens as pets, we got eggs, and we kept the hens even after their egg laying days were done. They are nice creatures, and I think smarter than people give them credit. We used to sleep with the chicks as kids. We'd stuff the chick in a large man's work sock, and snuggle up and the chic would be soo happy, make a pretty song. As the chick grew, it'd figure out how to climb out of the sock, so sometimes there'd be a pellet on the sheet, but a happy half-grown chicken standing by looking at you. Not a good idea about the free-range, especially with wildlife or dogs. The sweetest dogs still have predatory urges, especially when you aren't around, just like teenagers. Lost some that way.

Living in a country where is still very common to see chickens living in the back yard even in a city, my mother in law has four, very well locked inside a small chicken house...I really never saw a chicken living indoors, these photos besides its originality are excellent photos with beautiful takes and excellent colours, a very good gallery you have here! Congratulations....

Toni - I have been meaning to leave a message for a very long time. I'm sneaking this in while my kids are in the darkroom. Forst of all, the sequence is a total wonder. Hi Toni We used to keep Rhode island red hens & one cockeral during WW2 (you wont remember) In the UK we were so short of eggs etc that the only way was to grow your own so to speak, Problem for the hens when they stopped laying they went in the cooking pot. Ahh not so happy days.

Hi Toni, this is just a lovely gallerie. We had a chicken in the house once too, her name was Josephine. One day she threw up and a few hours later she was dead. I brought her to the vet for examination and it appeared she had swallowed 5 of the kid's marbles!! and they had blocked her stomach. By the way, I renewed my gallerie Rhyming Image and added some pet galleries (cats, dogs and sheep)
