Georgia Power Plant Yates and Wansley Coal Train

This train is a model of one of the trains used to deliver coal to Plant Yates or Plant Wansley in west Georgia. Plant Wansley was setup for dumping coal over a large trestle, so rotary gondolas were not able to be used. Plant Yates had rotary dump facilities.

I determined the quantity and type of equipment used for this train using the 1991 rosters in Andrew Dow's book "Norfolk and Western Coal Cars". The proportion of each car class was calculated based on a planned 45 car train.

Some models are fairly close to the prototype while other prototypes have no model, so I had to ignore some classes. I focused the majority of the fleet on two car types: the Bachmann 100 ton hopper, a decent match for N&W's H12, H49 and H50 class, and the Bowser 100 ton hopper, a close match for N&W's H11A through H11E classes. Con-Cor 12 panel 100 ton hoppers were used for Southern's HS58 class, though some modifications will need to be made to those cars once appropriate decals are available. Other classes that aren't statistically significant but provide some variety have been included, such as the ex-Rock Island hoppers leased from B&LE, the ex-NKP H43 class, and Southern's HS8 and HS15 classes.

Some classes are over-represented by the models on hand, which skews the total number, so these extra cars act as filler until the cars actually needed have been purchased. Here are the totals:
