The Village of Xieng Maen ...IMG_1834_1.JPG

Continuing my exploration around Luang Prabang, I decided to visit the village across the Mekong river. There are two ways to get there.. You can use the tourist boat - $3.00 one way or if you walk down the river a little way you find the local boats. Well the tourist boat has you sitting in a deck chair for the crossing whereas the local boat has you sitting on a plank with the edge of the boat about 6 inches above the water line. Naturally, I take the local boat because I see they are much more frequent and the locals are only paying about 60 cents to cross. When I get to the other side though the guy demands I pay twice what the locals are paying.. That's a pretty common form of discrimination in this part of the world. I didn't press the issue, I guess I took up twice as much room as most of the locals.

Anyway, once I crossed, I walked to the outskirts of the village and came across this school where the girls (only) are playing this game. They have a string stretched somewhere around the height of the kids and they run and leap into the air and attempt to get one foot over the top and pull the string down enough to get over. They were certainly enjoying themselves.
