Good lighting is critical to getting good pictures. These were taken late in the day, so the ISO was increased to 400. A flash could have been used, but a flash would flatten the image, removing shadows that otherwise help provide an appreciation of angles and curves. Background can also be important. The background here is not ideal as it competes with the subject. A neutral background would be best.
