Hellebore steering wheels often suffer from rim failure in the form of numerous cracks. The construction method used for the rims was unusual, but it was the adhesive used on the wood that has become the reason for glue failure. I hesitate in calling it a glue since it appears more like a caulk type adhesive. Whatever it was, it didn't do a good job of surviving the years. While I would normally make repairs to a period rim, in the case of Hellebore I have learned to just replace them. My attempts at repairing cracks have always resulted in more cracks. The clamping pressure causes the failure elsewhere in the rim. This rim was replaced after removing the finish and discovering the severity of the cracking.
