Restoration of Porsche Carrera 2 teak steering wheel
This steering wheel came to me with rusted spokes and rim in need of repair. After removing the wood rim with careful attention to preserving all wood pieces, the frame was media blasted and stripped of all old plating. The removal of the old plating was done in steps so that the plating could be analyzed and the original process understood. The spokes were conditioned and then plated in the exact same way they had been done originally, which differs from the process used on the plastic rimmed wheels. Unlike the brushed heavy chrome on the plastic rimmed wheels, the chrome plating on these wheels was lighter and only lightly polished. Over time this chrome experienced corosion that left it dull and pitted. My restoration shows a spoke that is lightly polished as it was when if left the factor.
The wood was scraped of all old varnish and repairs were made. The wood rim was reapplied with a black epoxy, then cleaned of excess epoxy. The rim was finished with an industrial UV clear finish, then rubbed to a smooth luster.
It was a great pleasure to be able to restore this wonderful and rare steering wheel to its original condition.
