Windjana Gorge 3

The walls of Windjana Gorge rise abruptly from the wide alluvial floodplain of the Lennard River, reaching about 100 metres high in some places. The 3.5-kilometre long gorge cuts through the limestone of the Napier Range; part of an ancient (Devonian) barrier reef.

"Down in this gorge, a battle once raged - one of the largest shoot-outs on Australia's frontier. On the sandy banks were police, defending themselves against a large number of armed Bunuba men hidden in the caves above. Their leader is this young man - Jandamarra. Only two weeks earlier, he was a trusted and talented employee of the police he is now fighting. Forced to choose between two loyalties, he chose to fight for his people. He fought on for another three years. This is Jandamarra country. Europeans have been here for only a few generations. This is magical country - home to a magical hero. To Jandamarra's people, he is both ordinary man and extraordinary magician. He is a hero but also an outlaw. Some call him the Aboriginal Ned Kelly."
