The three Scoters in general are rare, but regular migrants through TN. Surf is the one I encounter most often though. These bulky sea ducks are most apt to be picked out of sizeable flocks of other divers, but they will on occasion make it easy and be found on their own. I am yet to see a full-plumage male Scoter in TN.
