Killdeer

This ubuquitous species is easily the most familiar shorebird to most Tennesseans, birders and non-birders alike. It is hard to miss in any open environments, from parking lots to mudflats. It is TN's only regularly breeding shorebird, other than the secretive Woodcock, and very locally the Black-necked Stilt. Secretive in no way belongs in any description of the Killdeer, as their strident calls have no problem alerting you to their presence!
