Short-billed Dowitcher

Ensley area; Shelby Co, TN

We had great looks at both Dowitchers, though not side-by-side, in a roadside pool. Short-bills outnumbered Long-bills for the 1st time of the season today.

On these two birds, note very clean throat and though the lower flanks are barred, the area at the breast sides is spotted, compare these features to the Long-billed in the next image. The spots on the underparts go all the way to the belly, which is unmarked on Long-billed.

The primary extension is noticeable on the bird to the left, which Long-billed lacks. Also, though subtle, the tibia is shorter on these birds than the Long-billed.
