Long-tailed Duck

Paris Landing area, Henry Co TN

This nice female-type Long-tailed Duck was a treat when we found it at Paris Landing. It was asleep when I picked it up, and is pretty distinctive for a sleeping duck. It is in the forefront of this photo, where it blends with the water pretty well. I thought it was an adult bird initially, but I'm not certain now. The distinctness of the face pattern I thought was a better match for an adult bird, but the amount of duskiness along the sides at times look better for a younger bird. At other times the duskiness looked to be just a breast-band, as shown by adult females. These birds can be very complicated to age while still in the female-like plumage.

It made several flights around the area, before finally flying out of sight to the north over the Paris Landing bridge. This makes me think it is the same restless bird that Jeff had at Britton Ford last weekend.
