Mottled Duck

Eagle Creek flats on KY Lake; Henry Co.

IN this shot of the bird facing away, the concolorous tail is again evident. The speculum is visible, though hard to see because the white borders aren't visible. The narrow white borders along the lower edge of the speculum were visible when the birds stretched their wings or flew, but at rest were not usually seen. The big white bars on the nearby Mallards were always visible if you could see the speculum.
