Jungle Nightjar

Korea

Not a bird I expected to get looks like this at! We literally stumbled across this bird near the lighthouse on Socheong, as it flushed up from near the path and then roosted on this branch. It was near dark, so I was pleased to have gotten even this grainy shot.

One of the most amazing experiences of the trip occured on the ferry back from Socheong. In a little over an hour, 84 Grey (or Jungle) Nightjars and 57 Brown Hawk Owl/Northern Boobook were observed migrating over the ocean by day. This seems to be an unprecedented count of both birds.
