Brown Shrike

Korea

This is one of my favorite photographs, and birds, of the trip. I love Shrikes, and wish we hadn't been just in front of the Tiger Shrike period. We had several Brown Shrikes on the islands, of at least three subspecies, this being 'lucionensis'. I also have a nice series of photos of a 'cristatus', and we also had a 'superciliosus'. This fetching bird was photographed on Eocheong, as I tried to get a photo of a Forest Wagtail.

In addition to Brown, we also had Bull-headed Shrike regularly.

Hi Michael, this bird may be L.c. confusus. L.c. lucionensis should have a uniformly gray crown. The bird in your photo looks identical to a confusus illustrated in Worfolk (2000). Worfolk considers confusus to be an intergrade population between lucionensis and cristatus. I haven't seen any photos of confusus as nice as yours!
