Thayer's Gull

As has been the case lately, I had a hard time getting the images I wanted of this sublety beautiful bird. This bird was 1st found by Jeff Wilson, and had frequented the same wet field for several days. The uniform coloration is evident here, although the frosty 'marbling' of the upperparts is much more pleasing in person than in this photo. The tertials and primaries are brown, not black, with the tertials being only marginally darker than the rest of the upperparts. The primaries are edged in pale, although from this angle only the tips are showing up. This feature was sometimes not that apparent, but when the light hit the bird right, the arrowheads on the primaries really stood out. Herring Gulls can show very narrow fringes, but not the bold pattern of Thayer's (exceptions apply). Thayer's is a little more attenuated than Herring, somewhat over-emphasized by this angle. The bill is still all-dark, and a nice smudge encircles the eye.
