There was a mud-puddle on the edge of the parking lot that this bird loved to get it. While not a pretty picture by any means, it does show the plumage pattern well. It is a little exaggerated here, but this bird always looked very attenuated, with long wing projection past the tail. When we 1st saw the bird, I wasn't sure if it was the same bird that Dave Roemer had reported, but assumed it was. I went through some hybird combinations, as some of these produce very muted birds like this one, though not generally a perfect match for kumlieni (though very good for Thayer's). Most of these combinations would be very unlikely to reach this far from the west coast, but none of these fit with the overall shape and size of the bird, or the bill. On a side note, a probable hybrid Western x Glaucous-winged was found in TX over the weekend, most likely the farthest east this combination has been found.
