Great Black-backed Gull

Once again, the whiteness and overall checkered pattern to the upperparts, and huge bill all contribute to make a very distinctive bird. I had hoped to get a flight shot, or at least a wing flap, to show the big white rump and extensively white tail with a narrow black tail band. The combination of size, lumbering flight, rump and tail pattern, inconspicuous window in upperwing, and overall coloration made the bird easily picked out in flight as far as you could see it. I watched it fly over the dam, from the boat launch area, and it was still easily ID'able.
