This Hawaiian Coot was frequenting the lake on the resort grounds we were staying at. It is in the minority of Hawaiian Coots in that the frontal shield is red and there is a dark mark on the bill. This bird is similar to our Coots, other than the obviously enlarged size of the frontal shield. Like most endemic Hawaiian birds, this is an endangered species.
