Whooping Cranes

Aransas NWR, Texas

Our 1st day of birding (after an all-day drive from TN to TX) began at Rockport, with a cruise to Aransas for the Whooping Cranes. We saw several family groups, but didn't get close enough for any really good shots. The unusual posture of the center bird is due to a territorial violation by another overflying family group of Whooping Cranes. Immediatly after I took this photo, the male took flight and "escorted" these trespassers out of his territory. I didn't realize how territorial these birds were on their wintering grounds until this tour.
