The underwing of Dowitchers is diagnostic if seen well, and can be used from a long distance at times. On Short-billed the lesser underwing coverts are uniformly marked with the rest of the underwing, whereas on Long-billed they are unmarked white and create a quite contrasty spot there at the base of the leading edge of the wing.
