Bird of the trip, the critically endangerd Palila. I had planned an excursion with Hawaii Forests & Trails to target this bird, but that trip fell thru at the last moment (but worked over very well since I went to Hakalau instead for a sweep of the endemics). So, I sweet-talked another day out of my wife (thanks babe!), rented a 4-wheel drive as the only road into Palila habitat is marked as 4-wheel drive otherwise it is about 5 miles on foot in and then back out. The 4-wheel drive wasn't necessary, but saved me a potential fine anyway. I had great info from local guide and photographer extraudinaire Jack Jeffrey http://jackjeffreyphoto.com/ and it didn't take but an hour or so once I reached the right area to find this gorgeous male Palila. But, if I hadn't known the vocalization I would never have found it, as it was off the road a good bit. Had a female in the same area as well.
