Two locations just northwest of Glasgow, Aberfoyle and Stirling.
Associated with Stirling Castle is the famous Scottish warrior king, Robert the Bruce. At the Battle of Bannockburn in June 1314, Bruce defeated a much larger English army under Edward II, confirming the re-establishment of an independent Scottish monarchy.
Within visual range of Stirling Castle is a monument to William Wallace, who defeated an English army in Stirling in an earlier battle for Scottish indepence in 1297. Wallace was later captured and savagely executed by order of Edward I for England. His story was the foundation of the movie 'Braveheart' starring Mel Gibson.
