This enormous palace was begun in 1457 by Luca Pitti,

a wealthy banker, who wanted to outrival the Medici.

Ironically, the palazzo was purchased by the Medici

when Pitti's heirs were bankrupted by the building costs.



The Boboli Gardens are on the hillside behind the

Pitti Palace where the stone to build it was quarried.
