The Via Flaminia, connecting the city with the Adriatic coast,
entered Rome through this gate.
The Via dates from 220 BC; this grand gate was ordered by
Pope Pius IV Medici in the 16th Century.
In the 17th Century, Bernini was commissioned by Pope Alexander VII
to decorate its inner face.
