The Dutch Windmill was built in 1902 to harness San Francisco's westerly winds to pump water for Golden Gate Park. After an electric pump was installed in 1913 it was left as a landmark, suffering neglect for years until it was restored in 1981. Its sails have been anchored to protect them from the wind.
