In the 13th C. a huge wolf devastated the countryside near this church. Saint Francis who lived in the monastery there, heard of it, sought out the wolf and reproached him for his misdeeds. The wolf, in tears, offered his paw to Francis and promised never to hurt anyone again. After which, the wolf was adopted and fed by the people, lived to an old age and was buried in consecrated soil. The wolf's tomb became an object of pilgrimage.
