The well-travelled obelisk in the Piazza di San Giovanni was brought by
Constantine from the Temple of Ammon in Thebes to Alexandria and
later presented to the Roman Senate by his son Constantius II. It
was moved from the Circus Maximus to this spot by Pope Sixtus V in 1588.
